When I was a growing up, I watched my mom who is a single parent, do hard work and miss out on our important days such as birthdays, parent-teacher meetings and our very first basketball game. As much as me and my brother wanted to rebel and get mad at her for being such a workaholic, all we could ever do was support her through tough times. Divorce can really be painful for both parents but more importantly, to the children involved. My mother fought for her right as a parent of two children. Her company is not supporting parental leave rights during those times. Living in a country when a certain person’s right in not a priority, made it even harder for her. She was lucky to have a job because women in our country are not accustomed to work. Her fight for a parental bonding leave all paid off when the company she is working with practiced it. Sharing time and bonding with each other is important but money is vital for survival in our case. It made parents educating at home easier, nothing beats a parent helping their own children with their homework. My mom deserved it, we deserved it. Ever since that day, she never missed out on every important event of our lives. I’m so thankful to have a mother like my mom, after all of the pain she’s been through we’ve been a witness of her determination. My brother and I made a promise to her that after college we’ll make sure to give her everything her heart desires. We will give her a paid leave vacation with us forever.
