Asking a friend on a date should be easy. It’s almost always easier to talk to someone you know than a complete stranger right? That’s true; it might even be easier to say the words. But, overall dating a friend is far more complex.

If a random stranger rejects you, sure it hurts, but you can brush it off and move on. On the other hand if you are rejected by your best friend, it will hurt, lastingly, so its important to think things over before you make any kind of move.

If you have already asked them on a date and they’ve said yes, that’s great news! But… maybe not as great as you think. For obvious reasons friends don’t like hurting each other so a yes could just mean that they are trying to let you down softly over time. I know that’s hard to hear, but it’s better to know it ahead of time. Of course, they might also be delighted. Try and remember how they reacted when you ask them. Did they pause? For how long? Did they seem pleased? Relieved? It can be hard to tell but try to make an educated guess.

Another problem mixing dating and friends creates is that if you date friends all of the normal little actions that couples make will feel weird for quite some time. Everything from a kiss to holding hands to having conversations will likely be difficult for a while. You have to remember that you are in this together. Communicate with your partner and it will make everything a lot easier.

If you find yourself obsessing over your friend, maybe its best that you look elsewhere. Try an online dating site. There are many sites that cater to almost any specialty (e.g. you can find 5 sites competing to be the best Christian dating site). Remember that you have other options.

If you can overcome the possibility of rejection and then move beyond the period of weirdness in your relationship, then yes, you can in fact date a friend!
